Statement on Unequal Treatment at Maastricht University
Today, we were informed that an event organized by Jewish students will not be permitted by Maastricht University. This decision is deeply concerning, particularly in light of the fact that events organized by Free Palestine Maastricht have proceeded without interruption.
The most recent example was on March 12, 2025, when a public lecture by Rawan Osman took place. Free Palestine Maastricht explicitly called for this event to be disrupted — and that is precisely what occurred. You can see some video footage on the website of Telegraaf: https://www.telegraaf.nl/video/603717971/gevecht-uitgebroken-tijdens-lezing-pro-israelische-spreker
This pattern suggests a troubling inequality in how Maastricht University facilitates or restricts events depending on who organizes them. Equal treatment and the safeguarding of academic freedom and open debate must apply to all students, regardless of their background or perspective.
We urge the university to reconsider its decision and to uphold the principle of non-discrimination in its event policies.
