A New “Philopalestinian” Zeitgeist in Western Metropolises – An Analysis of the Alliance Between Far-Left and Islamic Antisemitism by Islamic Studies Scholar Dr. Abdel-Hakim Ourghi

“The terror unleashed by Hamas has amplified and emboldened antisemitic tendencies in society,” writes Islamic scholar Dr. Abdel-Hakim Ourghi on his Facebook page. “These tendencies are not only growing louder, but are also being publicly and visibly articulated.”

Ourghi, author of the remarkable book Die Juden im Koran – Ein Zerrbild mit fatalen Folgen (The Jews in the Quran – A Distorted Image with Fatal Consequences), argues that “a fusion of old-new far-left extremism and Muslim antisemitism” has created a historically unprecedented situation in Western Europe. These forces are mutually reinforcing, he writes, and are converging into a threat to Jews that must be taken seriously.

Western metropolises, Ourghi asserts, have developed into bastions of predominantly leftist-academic and Islamic antisemitism, anti-Judaism, and anti-Israelism. “Since October 7, 2023,” he observes, “a kind of ‘Philopalestinian’ sentiment has taken hold, which functions solely within the binaries of good versus evil, weak versus strong. In this worldview, Israel is simply the aggressor.”

The horrific massacre of Jews on October 7 is not only being forgotten by Israel’s haters, Ourghi notes, but is also actively suppressed—rendered meaningless, or at the very least, reframed. “It is instrumentalized to the extent that Hamas terrorists are cast as defenders, whose actions must be interpreted through the lens of historical struggle.”

Ourghi stresses that Islamic antisemitism cannot exist without the perpetrator-victim dichotomy. It deepens this binary and strengthens the conviction of its propagandists: every Muslim antisemite insists that “the Jews,” in a global sense, are the perpetrators, while “the Muslims” are the victims.

“In this narrative,” Ourghi summarizes, “Muslims appear as innocent people persecuted by Jews, merely defending themselves. The Middle East conflict becomes a perfect vehicle to exploit this motif.” Victims of Israeli policy, in this view, are not just those in Gaza or under the authority of the Palestinian Authority, but all Palestinians—including those living in the West. Even non-Muslims, ultimately, must be recruited to affirm the ‘legitimacy’ of ‘the Palestinian cause.’”

“This strategy has been alarmingly successful since October 7,” Ourghi observes, “even within leftist and liberal-left circles. What we are witnessing is an unholy alliance—one that not only questions Israel’s right to exist, but threatens Jews everywhere.”

Note: Dr. Abdel-Hakim Ourghi’s new book, Die Liebe zum Hass – Israel, 7. Oktober 2023 (The Love of Hate – Israel, October 7, 2023), will be published this spring by Claudius Verlag, Munich.
